    1. Thanks for your comment, Sandra! I confess I don't know what a bleedthrumanade map is--can you explain more?

    2. Oh, you fell into my trap! Got lemons, make lemonade. Got marker bleed thru, make bleedthrumanade! It just means that instead of avoiding marker bleed through when I use alcohol markers (or other mediums that bleed through), I color on one side, then draw or used mixed media. Then I turn the page or paper and use the same color base to create a totally different finished piece. If you're interested, here's a link to one of them:http://lifeimitatesdoodles.blogspot.com/2012/07/bleedthrumanade-with-butterflies-and.html

  8. I am working on a white box that is covered with Zentangles, and which I am going to fill with tangles hedrons. I just finished an icosahedron, made with water color paper. I had finished a truncated icosahedron out of regular copy paper, but I gave that one away. I needed to make a stronger one anyway,,, Also, prisms, and other oh, so many other shapes.

    1. So many interesting things you all are doing. I don't know if I've ever met a truncated icosahedron:)

    2. I hadn't either, so, like I did, you will just have to Google it! But it won't be tangled.

  9. Hi Serena, congratulations on your book, it looks just wonderful. I am currently working on a travel journal of my recent trip to Italy and London. I love to use mixed media techniques and I'm excited about trying some printing methods too.

  10. Your book looks fabulous! Lately, I have mostly been making mixed media pieces, adding everything but the kitchen sink.

  11. I just bought your book, it looks awesome! I spent all day yesterday painting (!) first finishing a mixed media piece using Chris Cozen's new pod stencils, then a little owl using Juliette Crane's tutorial, gessoed two large canvases, and painted a background for another owl creature for my daughter's room. Now it's back to work :-)

  12. Hi Serena,
I recently started to blog to share my creative journey as a mixed media artist.

I love the Wabi-Sabi philosophy and am mindful of it when I spend time in my garden...rusty metal, abandoned bird nests, chipped paint, broken flower pots...will send you some photos :)

  13. Hi Serena,
I am always looking for new ideas and new techniques to try - I'm always learning something new. As long as it has to do with paper, pen or pencil, I'm in. I mostly make greeting cards, totally loving Zentangle (getting certified at the end of this month so I can teach it) and some mixed media canvases and hand made art journals, and...and.. I can't wait to read your book and learn more about Wabi-Sabi.

  14. I have been mostly a fiber artist, but an wanting to move in a new direction. Imperfection has always fascinated me. Right now we are working on fixing some of the imperfections in the house for summer that we bought in MN. Now I don't know if my stuff is here or in CO. Such problems. When things get settled down, Wabi-Sabi is for me. gjeneve@gmail.com

  28. You do fabulous things Serena Barton! Love you and your style! As for me, I am actually cleaning the studio after a year of projects and class proposals. This decision made when I have to keep buying the glue that I cannot find ....but know I have 6 tubes of already somewhere.....tsk tsk. Also sorting out jewelry stash for the Hope For Oklahoma auction, round #2 set for starting on FB Monday. As for projects, looking to use ordinary things in ordinary ways this summer....starting with my milk container :) I am not a painter (except for walls!) so am not sure how to best use paint on those. Would an initial coat of gesso work or is there something solvent based that would bond?

    1. Thank you, Lynne. I don't know what would adhere to the milk container--you mean a plastic one? Anyone else have ideas?

  42. I'm working on a collage for a friend who is getting married in July. Her father just passed away a few months ago and so I am trying to incorporate some special memories and thoughts about her and him and where he came from. He was an artist from NJ originally so I am thinking in terms of his roots.

  43. I'm working on getting back to work again. Wabi-Sabi is what I called my "art business" years ago. I consider myself a wabi-sabi artist. I love the concept of imperfection, incompleteness and impermanence. I have two books on Wabi-Sabi philosophy--one by Leonard Koren and one by andrew Juniper. I look forward to adding your book of WS techniques to my library even if I don't win as I will buy it! Never heard of re-inkers but your paintings look a bit like encaustic paintings. suki

I have those two wabi-sabi books also. I love your art work and poetry. May I post "Fading Memories" on this blog, with attribution and a link?

Your poetry is also very moving--to some of my favorite women artists.

  46. hi serena! congrats on your book! i asked my dtr to buy it for me yesterday! i am a self taught metalsmith that d/t a mean artist block for about a year, i started doing papercrafts which led to collaging which i am addicted to and still searching for my own style, when i stumbled on to your blog and artwork i felt like i had arrived home! tx so much for sharing and inspiring! right now i am addicted to gesso, stencils and stamping, but i am trying to figure out some different surfaces, and i think you said "you just have to experiment, and there are no mistakes!" so last night i got a little crazy with the gesso! i am trying to get away with everything being too uniform, too perfect, i am such a virgo! tx again for your beautiful art and now your book! aloha, angi in hana

  48. I'm doing what I always do: creating with a variety of both vintage and new, 'found' and 'procured' mixed media art materials, on paper, board, and in shadow box format. I have an interview coming out in issue #4 of "Featuring" Magazine, called "No Brain for Math and Science," and a piece that will be included in the North Light Books publication, Incite: Dreams Realized, which will be published this fall. Anxious to read your new book "Wabi Sabi Art Workshop," as the wabi sabi concept of 'impermanence' is something I attempt to engage in my own art, from time to time.

  49. Congratulations on your new book, it looks inspiring! Your work is lovely.
